Corner clips. Strap-and-buckle gadgets. Non-slip pads. A deeper pocket. Re-tucking it every single morning. We went through every fix our own customers described trying before they found us — and the pattern in what failed is more useful than the thing that worked.
The short version. A fitted sheet does not come off because the elastic is weak. It comes off because a hem elastic pulls the fabric inward around the perimeter, and the force that dislodges a corner at three in the morning is directed outward and upward. Nothing that grips the outside of the sheet changes that geometry, which is why clips and gadgets mostly relocate the problem instead of fixing it. Two things do change it: a pocket cut for the actual height of your bed, and straps that pass underneath the mattress so the pull is downward at the four corners. Everything else on this list is a workaround.
Why a corner lets go at 3 a.m.
One of our customers described the mechanism better than any product page has managed to, without meaning to:

Scooting rather than lifting. That is the whole thing. A person who lifts their hips to turn over transfers almost no lateral force into the sheet. A person who scoots drags the fabric sideways across the mattress with their full body weight on it, and every drag pulls a few millimetres of fabric out from under the corner. Do that twenty times a night and the corner arrives at the edge some time before morning.
Which is why the people who report this most are not careless bed-makers. They are heavy sleepers, restless sleepers, couples, and anyone with something heavy on top of the bed.

There is a fourth group, and it is the hardest case of all: a weighted blanket. Fifteen or twenty pounds sitting on the sheet and moving with the sleeper is a continuous outward drag that no hem elastic was designed for.
Every fix people try first, and what happened
We are not going to claim we bought and bench-tested a drawer full of bedding gadgets. What we have is better and harder to fake: our customers arrived here after trying them, and a number of them wrote down what happened.

The clip-and-strap case, in the words of someone who used them

Read that carefully. They worked. The strap-under-the-mattress principle is sound — it is the same physics as a sewn-in strap. What made her stop using them is that they are a separate object you have to unclip from four corners, set aside, and re-fit every single wash. Weekly. Forever.
That is the actual argument for having the strap sewn to the sheet rather than bought in a packet: not that it holds better, but that it is still there in six months, because nobody has to decide to reattach it.
And the case where nothing worked at all

Years. Many brands. Corner clips. That is the full sequence most people run before they conclude the problem is unsolvable, and it is worth naming because the order is almost always the same: blame the sheet, buy another sheet, blame yourself, buy a gadget, give up.
The two things that actually hold
1. A pocket cut for the real height of your bed. Not the mattress — the mattress plus the protector plus the topper, measured from the base seam to the top surface. A sheet that only reaches by stretching is under tension all night and eventually loses. A sheet with six inches of surplus gathers into ridges. Both are fit failures; only one of them is the one everybody talks about.
2. Straps that pass under the mattress, sewn to the sheet. This is the part worth understanding rather than taking on faith. Hem elastic runs around the perimeter and pulls the edge inward. A strap crossing the underside pulls the corner downward, against the weight of the mattress itself. Those are different directions, and only the second one opposes the force that lifts a corner.

Zuanne names the corner by the pillow, which is not a coincidence. On most mattresses the widest point of the profile is in the upper third, so the top corners are the ones a sheet has to travel furthest to reach. If only one corner goes on your bed, that is usually why — and it is the same reason the fix has to be structural rather than a matter of pulling harder.

The benefit nobody mentions until they have it
Every review above is about the sheet staying on. This one is about getting it on in the first place, and it had not occurred to us:
"Has built-in straps to help put on — perfect for me, I am 70 with arthritis — plus the straps help hold the sheet in place. My husband is a mover at night and making the bed was a nightmare."

A strap gives you something to pull on that is not the fabric. On a tall mattress, or with hands that do not grip well, that changes making the bed from a wrestling match into a two-second action per corner. It is not a feature anybody markets, and it is the reason at least one of our customers bought a second one.
What straps do not fix
Here is the part we would rather say ourselves than have you find out.
Straps hold the corners. They do not make a sheet taut. If the sheet is cut generous for your mattress, the corners will stay anchored and the middle will still ripple. Two customers described exactly that, and both were right:

Our own King runs generous — every report of a sheet being too big that recorded a size was a King. We wrote that up honestly in are deep-pocket sheets too loose, and the surplus-fabric problem in general in why a bed looks untidy an hour after you make it.
Straps do not stop the layers above from migrating. A smooth sateen is low-friction on both faces. Anchoring the bottom sheet does nothing for a flat sheet or duvet that slides off the side, and a few customers found the fabric too slippery overall:

We read every complaint of that kind and published what they had in common in are bamboo sheets too slippery. Short answer: on the bottom sheet it is rare and usually a sizing issue; on the layers above it is real and a duvet cover fixes it.
And a pocket can be too deep for you. One customer with a 12- to 13-inch mattress bought our 16-inch sheet, liked it, and said plainly that it would suit a thicker bed better. He is right, and a strap will not remove surplus fabric — it only stops the corner lifting.

Questions people ask next
Do sheet straps actually work?
Yes, and so do the clip-on kind — the physics is the same. The difference is that a sewn-in strap is still attached after the twentieth wash, and a clip-on set is a separate object you have to remove and refit every time. That is the reason people stop using the ones they bought in a packet.
What is the best way to keep a fitted sheet from coming off?
Get the pocket depth right for your whole stack, then anchor the corners underneath rather than at the edge. Those two together solve most beds. Grippers, pads and re-tucking are workarounds for a construction problem.
Why does only one corner come off?
Usually a top corner, and usually because the widest part of the mattress profile is in the upper third — so that corner is the one the sheet has to travel furthest to reach. It is a geometry problem, not a manufacturing defect.
Are non-slip pads or rug tape a good idea?
They add friction under the sleeping surface, and friction is exactly what a body weight moving sideways overcomes. They also sit between you and the mattress and change how the bed feels. We would try the fit and the anchoring first.
Do corner straps help on an adjustable bed?
They are close to essential there, because the mattress changes shape every night and a hem elastic has nothing to resist that with. We went into what else matters on an articulating base in fitted sheets for adjustable beds.
Will a deeper pocket fix it?
Only if the pocket was genuinely too shallow. If it was not, a deeper one adds surplus fabric that gathers into ridges. Measure before you go deeper — the arithmetic is in choosing pocket depth after a mattress topper.
What about a weighted blanket?
That is the hardest version of this problem, because the load is continuous rather than intermittent. It is also the case where the difference between edge elastic and under-mattress straps shows up fastest.
