Are Sheets a Good Gift? Only If You Can Answer Three Questions About Their Bed.
Sheets look like a safe present. Soft, useful, universally needed, hard to get wrong. They are in fact one of the few gifts that can fail on a measurement you were never told — and the failure shows up on the first night, in someone else's bedroom, where you will never see it.
The short answer. Sheets are not a taste item. They are a fit spec. A fitted sheet has to match a size and a height, and the height is the one nobody knows about their own bed, let alone somebody else's. Find out three things before you buy — size, stack height, and whether the bed is under load. If you can't find them out, give the piece that has no fit risk at all. And if this is for December, do the research now and place the order later; buying early quietly costs the recipient their return window.
Why you're reading this in September
Because roughly half of North American holiday shoppers have already started. In Bankrate's survey of holiday shoppers, conducted with YouGov, 48% said they begin before Halloween — 12% by the end of August, 13% in September, 24% in October. The industry read on the 2026 season says the same thing louder: shopping is starting earlier, and buyers are spending more time on price transparency and less on impulse.
Which is rational for almost everything. A sweater bought in September is the same sweater in December.
Bedding is the exception, and it is worth understanding why before you put anything in a cart.
The thing early buying costs, and nobody mentions
Return windows on bedding run from delivery, not from the occasion.
Our own policy is a fair example of the category, and we will quote it against ourselves: we offer a 30-day return window from receipt of the product, and returned items must be unused, unwashed, and in their original packaging. Opened items are returnable only if they are defective. Most bedding brands are somewhere in this neighbourhood; some are tighter.
Do the arithmetic. A sheet set bought on 19 September and delivered the following week has an open return window until roughly late October. If it is a Christmas present, the recipient opens it two months after the window closed. If the size is wrong, the depth is wrong, or the colour is wrong in their room, there is nothing either of you can do.
The gift that has a return window is the one bought in late November or December. That is the opposite of what every early-shopping guide tells you, and for this one category it is correct.
So September is not the month to buy bedding as a gift. It is the month to find out what to buy — which, as it happens, is the part that actually takes time, and the part you can only do while you still have casual access to their bedroom.
"A King" is not a bed
Here is the assumption that sinks most bedding gifts: that knowing the size is knowing enough.
A fitted sheet has to travel over the top of the mattress, down the sides, and far enough under to be held. Two King beds can differ by eight inches of height depending on the mattress, the protector and the topper. The sheet does not know it is on a King. It knows how far it has to reach.

Those last two are five-star reviews from people whose beds are shallower than the sheet expects. They noticed. They mentioned it unprompted, in a positive review, because it was the most notable thing about the fit. A recipient who is being polite about a present will notice the same thing and say nothing at all.
Three things to find out, and how
None of these require asking "what size are your sheets," which gives the surprise away and, in our experience of reading a few hundred reviews, frequently gets the wrong answer anyway.

If the stack height turns out to be the unknown, that one has a guide of its own — choosing pocket depth after a mattress topper. And if you know they share the bed with someone restless, the reason that matters is in why only one side of a fitted sheet comes off.
The fourth thing, which you cannot research
Colour. There is no label, no measurement and no casual question that tells you what will look right in a room you have seen four times. Treat it as the irreducible risk and design around it: either give the piece where colour matters least, or buy late enough that it can be exchanged.
What to give when you can't find out
Sometimes you simply cannot get into the bedroom. The ranking below is by how much fit risk each option carries, not by how generous it looks.
No fit risk
Pillowcases
A pillowcase has one dimension that matters and standard pillows are standard. Ours are $28–29 for a pair in Queen and King, which is also a price that does not put anyone under obligation. The unglamorous argument for them is the strongest one: the pillowcase is the piece that wears out first in almost every set, which we wrote up in why pillowcases wear out before the sheets. You are replacing the thing that actually needs replacing.
Low fit risk — if you know the size but not the height
The fitted sheet on its own
A fitted sheet built with corner straps that pass under the mattress covers a range of bed heights rather than one number, because the straps take up whatever slack a shallower bed leaves over. Ours is cut for stacks from 10 to 18 inches; the fitted sheet inside our set stops at 16. That range is the reason the single piece is the safer gift of the two, and it is also the half of a sheet set that does the work.
Real fit risk — only when you know all three answers
The full set
Generous, and correct when you have the numbers. But it commits you to a size, a depth and a colour at once, and it is the option where being wrong is most expensive for the person who has to say thank you.
How people who give sheets actually arrive at it
We went looking through our review file for gift-givers and found something that reframed the whole question. Almost nobody in it bought sheets as a gift after reading about them. They bought sheets for themselves, lived with them, and then bought more for someone else.

That is a customer on her third purchase, and the gift is the third one. It is a small thing but it points somewhere useful: the most reliable version of this gift is one you have already slept on. If you have a set you like on your own bed, you already know the answer to every question in this article except their measurements, and you can speak about it honestly rather than hopefully.
If you don't, and December is the deadline, the genuinely sensible order of operations is: find out the three numbers now, buy one for yourself in October, and buy theirs in December with the return window open.
What can still go wrong
Since we are asking you to spend money on somebody else's bed, here is the part we would rather say than have you discover.
Colour can shift on contact. One customer found that ours marked after a single night and did not wash out:
"The pillowcase and sheets both changed colour after the first sleep in them. I assumed a wash would get rid of the discolouration but it did not. Edit: Company offered me a full refund. Made the return process simple."

We take that seriously enough that we published the whole complaint set in why bamboo sheets stain and what actually washes out. Note also what his edit says: the written policy is unused and unwashed, and support refunded him anyway once something was clearly wrong. That is how it went for him. It is not a promise about how it will go for everyone, and we are not going to pretend otherwise in an article encouraging you to buy.
Our King runs generous. Every report we have of a sheet being too big that recorded a size was a King — the full set of them is in are deep-pocket sheets too loose. If the recipient is fussy about a drum-tight surface and their bed is a King, factor that in.
And the good outcome, for balance. The longest-running report in our file is a customer who went back through years of order history to find the same set again:
"I had to go all the way back to my 2021 purchases to try and find these exact sheets, because let me tell ya, these are amazing. We've had this set for almost five years now and only have a couple of holes and snags — I'm sure that's from having cats."

Are sheets a good gift?
They are a good gift for someone whose bed you can measure, and a risky one for anyone else. The risk is not taste, it is fit: a fitted sheet has to match a size and a height, and the height is the number almost nobody knows about their own bed.
Should I buy bedding gifts early in the sale season?
Do the research early and buy late. Return windows run from delivery, not from the occasion — ours is 30 days from receipt, on unused and unwashed items — so something bought in September is out of window well before December. Buying in late November or December is what gives the recipient a way to fix a wrong size.
What size sheets should I buy if I don't know their bed?

What if they already have nice sheets?
Then the gift is a second set, and that is a genuinely good present for anyone who has ever had to remake a bed at eleven at night. It also removes most of the colour risk, because you can match what they already chose.
Is a gift receipt enough?
It helps, but check what it actually covers. A receipt does not extend a return window that has already run out, and most bedding policies require the item unopened. The date of delivery is the date that matters.
